20/01/2010- In summer 2010 it has been decided the JRTSUK will submit an application to the Kennel Club for recognition of the breed.
16/08/2009-At our first annual AGM held on 16th August 2009 new officers and committee members were elected, we welcome Mrs Bernice Mackenzie as our new acting secretary, she has kindly donated her time to being the JRTSUK secretary until we enrol someone who can dedicate their time entirely to this roll with good communication skills.
Our new vice president is Mr Price, a working terrierman with years of experience in the field and press editor Mr Berry who will now deal with all the website stuff and newsletter as well as promotion of the club, a re vamp of the site will hopefully be completed by the end of August 2009.
Summer 2010 we are expecting to hold a small limited show for JRTSUK and FCI registered dogs only.
27/10/2008- We would like to thank those of you who have become members in the last 3 months of our official launch. We hope that many more will follow.
We hope the JRTSUK will be a first port of call for people looking for the traditional and healthy little JRT.
As a side note we feel we must express our position regarding the KC debate.
Our club is not KC nor is it affilliated to a KC.
We have not ruled this out entirely if the KC ever recognises the breed, though we will be ensuring if it does happen that the breed standard is maintained to sustain a healthy devlopment of the breed and the breed club encourages health testing of breeding stock, if you take a look at what KC recognition and very quick closure of the stud books has done to the Parson Russell in 18 years of being recognised, deafness, eye problems, ataxia, skin problems, heart defects and the list could go on are now all part and parcel of many PRT, this has happened because the breeders bred within such a small gene pool becuase the stud books were not open long enough to establish a sustainable gene pool and the KC have not made breeders health test their dogs prior to breeding- this should be mandatory!
JRTSUK is trying to keep a good gene pool of smaller dogs together, as you know its pretty hard to find smaller JRT's, the JRTSUK would like to make it easier for the general public to have access to good reputable breeders with nice smaller JRT's, so much info out there is about the much taller Parson Russell, JRTs seem to always have a bad press in books, magazines etc saying they are small yappy little dogs, when in reality they are far from this terrier terrible image. We who own them know that but sadly the general public don't!!
We find it highly disturbing though that people think because a dog has not got a pedigree it is a healthy breed!
A pedigree is just a piece of paper stating a dogs lineage, if you go back far enough non are actually pure bred, even the KC have in small print on the bottom of their registration forms that they do NOT guarentee the accuracy of their pedigree they issue to the new owner.
The JRTSUK keep records of the dogs registered and we also can issue you with a COI print out prior to any breeding, a COI is a co efficient of inbreeding percentage, so if the percentage is higher than 15% you would be able to make a different choice of breeding, the JRTSUK do not register dogs with a higher than 15% COI, there would have to be very good reason for doing so. So we are doing all possible to enable a good healthy gene pool exsists for many years to come.
We hope you will continue to support JRTSUK and remember we are here for everyone this is not just a place for breeders so even if you aren't a breeder and just own a JRT or are interested in the breed you can still become a member and register your JRT with us if you like, we are open to all.
